I have a confession to make. I hate Peruvian food.
I know, I know, it´s probably just because I´ve been sick. Or maybe I´m not really giving it a chance. I´ve only been in Peru for a week, so it´s entirely possible that I´ve only had really bad food so far.
But it might just be that I really do hate Peruvian food.
I´ll admit that a large part of my dislike is that Peruvian cuisine is extremely meat oriented. A typical dish is a bland hunk of chicken covered in a flavorless watery sauce, over rice. Probably the most famous Peruvian dish is Lomo Saltado, strips of gristly overcooked beef sauteed with onions and bell peppers, again over rice.
At home, I like to eat meat a couple times a week, and if I´m going to choose that, it´s probably going to be something really good. Here, there is meat in everything, all the time, and it´s usually really low quality and poorly prepared. And you don´t have a choice - everything has meat.
Because the food here generally isn´t appetizing at all, and 9 out of 10 times it´s going to be something that´s probably going to make me sick again anyway, it has been really hard to jump back on the Eating Food Regularly bandwagon after getting sick. Which probably has me holding a grudge.
Yesterday I officially gave up and ordered pasta for lunch.
However, the ceviche is awesome. I just can´t eat it anymore because it´s probably what made me sick in the first place.
